Before watching the movie clips, you probably formed your own picture of the characters, their personalities, and how certain scenes would look. Choose one character or scene that appeared differently in the movie than you imagined while reading. What was different, and did the movie change how you understood that character or scene?

Response: When I was reading Fences , I pictured the characters and scenes differently because I wasn’t imagining as much emotion. Watching the movie clips helped me actually see the characters’ emotions through their expressions, voices, and actions. It made the scenes feel more real to me and helped me understand the characters better. Summary: In class, we read fences  and watched a few movie clips. Reflection: I learned that watching a story can help you understand emotions in a way that reading sometimes cannot. Seeing the characters act out the scenes made me feel more connected to what was happening.

Troy’s revelation changes his relationship with Rose. Do you think one major lie or betrayal can permanently change how you see someone, even if you have known and trusted that person for years? Explain your reasoning and how trust can or cannot be rebuilt.

response : I think one major lie or betrayal can change how you see someone, even if you have known and trusted them for years. Once trust is broken, it can be hard to believe that person again because you may always wonder if they are hiding something else. However, I think trust can be rebuilt over time if the person is honest, takes responsibility, and shows through their actions that they have changed. Summary:we read fences Reflection: I learned that trust can take a long time to build but can be broken by one major mistake. I also learned that rebuilding trust requires honesty, patience, and effort from both people.

In Scene 4, Troy explains his beliefs about his responsibilities as a father. Beyond providing food, clothing, and shelter, what do you believe a parent owes their child emotionally? Should love, encouragement, friendship, and support be expected, or are those things separate from a parent’s responsibilities? Explain your perspective.

Prompt : I believe parents owe their children more than just food, clothing, and shelter. They should also give their children love, encouragement, support, and someone they can talk to when they are struggling. I think these things are part of being a parent because children need to feel cared for and understood, not just provided for. Summary :in class, we continued reading fences Reflection : I learned that being a parent is about more than just providing basic needs. Parents also have an important role in supporting their children emotionally and helping them feel loved.

In Scene 4, Troy talks about his past, his responsibilities, and the choices he has made in life. Have you ever had to choose between something you wanted to do and something you needed to do? What influenced your decision, and were you satisfied with your choice?

Response : I have had to choose between hanging out with my friends and going to work. Even though I wanted to spend time with my friends, I knew I needed to work because I had responsibilities and wanted to save money. My responsibilities influenced my decision, and I was satisfied with my choice because I knew I was doing what I needed to do. Summary : In class, we read and discussed Scene 4 of Fences and talked about Troy’s past, responsibilities, and choices. Reflection : I learned that sometimes we have to choose our responsibilities over the things we want to do. This scene showed me that our choices can have an impact on our lives.

Prompt: In Fences, Troy makes it clear that he believes his main responsibility as a father is to provide for Cory, not necessarily to like him or make him happy. Do you think parents have to like their children, or is it enough for them to love, provide for, and take care of them? Explain the difference between loving someone and liking someone. Do you agree or disagree with Troy's view of parenting? Explain your response and make a personal or real-world connection.

response:  I think parents should love and take care of their children, but they should also try to like them and have a good relationship with them. Loving someone means caring about them and wanting what is best for them, while liking someone means enjoying being around them and getting along with them. I agree that parents have a responsibility to provide for their children, but I don’t fully agree with Troy because children also need emotional support and to feel loved. A parent can provide food, a home, and other things, but having a good relationship with their child is important too. summary:  We continued reading fence  Reflection:  I learned that loving someone and liking someone are different, and that being a good parent is about more than just providing for your children.

In Fences, Lyons asks his father, Troy, to lend him money. Do you think adult children should ask their parents to borrow money, or should they be expected to handle their financial problems on their own? Explain your opinion and connect it to your own experiences, observations, or beliefs about family and money.

Response:  I think adult children can ask their parents to borrow money if they really need help, but they should also try to handle their financial problems on their own. Families should be able to help each other during difficult times, but it is also important to learn how to be responsible with money. In my family, I believe helping each other is important, especially when someone is struggling, but the person should still try to become financially independent. Summary:  We continued reading fence  Reflection:  I learned that money can sometimes cause disagreements between family members, even when they care about each other.

Prompt: In Fences, the fence is a physical object, but it can also represent the emotional or personal barriers people create. Think about a “fence” you have built in your own life. What were you trying to keep out or protect yourself from? Did that fence help you or hold you back? Explain.

response : One fence I have built in my life is keeping my feelings to myself. Sometimes I don’t like telling people when I’m upset or going through something because I don’t want to feel like a burden or be judged. This fence was meant to protect me, but sometimes it also held me back because I didn’t let people know how I really felt. I’ve learned that it is okay to open up to people I trust instead of always keeping my feelings behind a fence. Summary:  We started reading fence  and took notes. reflection:  I learned that fences can be a physical thing or represent emotional boundaries, trust issues, or separating people.

Prompt: After watching your classmates present their identity masks, think about how people are often more complex than what we see on the outside. What did the presentations teach you about looking beyond the surface when getting to know someone?

Response: I wasn’t really surprised by any of the presentations because I feel like I pretty much know my classmates. I feel like sometimes people show their true personalities, but sometimes they don’t, depending on how comfortable they are with the person. I know I have judged people before getting to know them, which I know isn’t really good. The presentations taught me that everybody is different and has different personalities, interests, and things they identify with. One thing I’ll do differently is try not to judge people and actually get to know them before making assumptions about who they are. Summary: we presented our identity mask. Reflection: I learned that everyone has different experiences, personalities, and qualities that may not always be visible on the surface. I also learned that taking the time to get to know someone can help me understand and appreciate who they really are.

In “Missing Your People,” Tracy Brower explains the importance of belonging. Describe a time when you felt like you truly belonged. What created that feeling?

Response: I feel like I truly belong when I’m with my best friend, who is also my cousin. We do almost everything together, and I feel very comfortable and accepted around her. She always listens to me and is there for me whenever I need someone to talk to. She has always been there for me, which is why I feel like I can be myself around her. She is not only my cousin but also one of my best friends. Summary: We worked on a comment lit. Reflection: I learned that the people in our lives can have a big impact on us, even if we don’t always realize it. The story taught me to appreciate the people I care about and the memories we share.

Prompt: Write about a fear you have overcome.

Response : One fear I have overcome is public speaking. I’m not really sure why I was afraid of it, but I would get nervous when I had to talk in front of people. I feel like this class has helped me overcome that fear because I have had more opportunities to speak in front of people and become comfortable around them. I still get nervous sometimes, but I don’t feel the same fear I used to. This experience has helped me become more confident when speaking in front of others. Summery: With ID pictures and we worked on our identity mask reflection. Reflection: I don’t really learn anything new since we just worked on our mask reflection about our self’s

Reflect on a time when you discovered a new perspective that completely changed how you viewed a person, group, or place. How did your previous “single story” shape your thoughts or actions?

Response : At first, I assumed that my coworker was really mean. Before I started talking to them, they would stare at me and give me mean looks, so I thought they didn’t like me. Eventually, I started talking to them and realized that they were actually pretty nice. I also learned that we have a lot of things in common. This experience taught me not to judge a book by its cover because you never really know what someone is like until you get to know them. Summery: We finished working on our Identity mask. Reflection: I really didn’t learn much since I was working on my mask and really didn’t go over too much new.
