Before watching the movie clips, you probably formed your own picture of the characters, their personalities, and how certain scenes would look. Choose one character or scene that appeared differently in the movie than you imagined while reading. What was different, and did the movie change how you understood that character or scene?

Response:When I was reading Fences, I pictured the characters and scenes differently because I wasn’t imagining as much emotion. Watching the movie clips helped me actually see the characters’ emotions through their expressions, voices, and actions. It made the scenes feel more real to me and helped me understand the characters better.

Summary:In class, we read fences and watched a few movie clips.

Reflection:I learned that watching a story can help you understand emotions in a way that reading sometimes cannot. Seeing the characters act out the scenes made me feel more connected to what was happening.

Prompt: In “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, the mother provides her daughter with numerous expectations about how a girl should behave. Reflect on a specific gender expectation within your culture that has been challenging for you to navigate. Then describe one clear example of this expectation and explain why it has been difficult for you. Keep your response concise, vivid, and focused on your personal experience.

Prompt Response:  One gender expectation that has been difficult for me to navigate is the idea that boys are supposed to act tough and hide their emotions. In both Mexican culture and society in general, many people expect guys to stay strong and not show how they really feel. This has been challenging for me because I am an emotional person, and sometimes I feel pressure to keep my feelings to myself so that I do not seem weak. A clear example is when I am upset or stressed but feel like I should hide it instead of talking about it openly. I do not agree with this expectation because I believe everyone should be able to express their emotions without being judged. Summary:  In class, we read and discussed “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid and took a quiz about the story.   reflection:  I learned that gender expectations can start at a young age and can affect how people are expected to act. I also learned that these expectations can be different depending on someone’s cult...

Prompt: Analyze how you’ve adapted to the demands of this course over the past week, and evaluate one strength and one challenge you anticipate as we progress, justifying your insights with personal examples.

Prompt Response: Over the past week I've gotten more comfortable with the class and it seems like I'll enjoy. I've gotten used to the assignments of discussions and have a better idea of how much work we will have. I like the structure of the class because it gives me opportunities to participate and hear different perspectives. One of my strengths is understanding other people's perspectives and trying to see things from their point of one of my strengths is understanding other people's perspectives and trying to see things from their point of view. One Challenge I think I will have a speaking in front of people and expressing myself. For example when I was called on in class I had an idea for what I wanted to say but I got nervous and had trouble putting my thoughts into words. I feel like as we continue I think I'll become more comfortable speaking and expressing ideas but it's going to be something I'll have to work on. Summary: In class we read a p...

Prompt: In Fences, Troy makes it clear that he believes his main responsibility as a father is to provide for Cory, not necessarily to like him or make him happy. Do you think parents have to like their children, or is it enough for them to love, provide for, and take care of them? Explain the difference between loving someone and liking someone. Do you agree or disagree with Troy's view of parenting? Explain your response and make a personal or real-world connection.

response:  I think parents should love and take care of their children, but they should also try to like them and have a good relationship with them. Loving someone means caring about them and wanting what is best for them, while liking someone means enjoying being around them and getting along with them. I agree that parents have a responsibility to provide for their children, but I don’t fully agree with Troy because children also need emotional support and to feel loved. A parent can provide food, a home, and other things, but having a good relationship with their child is important too. summary:  We continued reading fence  Reflection:  I learned that loving someone and liking someone are different, and that being a good parent is about more than just providing for your children.
