Prompt Response:growing up in a Mexican family food has always been away for us to spend time together. One customer I grew up with is eating meals together during family gatherings, especially on holidays together this custom shows my family value in family love and togetherness. This also helps me keep up with my traditions. Prompt: Write about a time when you realized that your perception of a particular food was based on a stereotype. Explain what the food was, what you originally believed about it, and where that belief came from. Then describe how your perspective changed after experiencing or learning more about the food. Be sure to include specific details about the moment your thinking shifted and what you learned from that experience.

Prompt Response: One time I had a stereotype about food was when I thought sushi would taste bad because it was made with raw fish. I got this idea from seeing it online and hearing people say they did not like it. When I finally tried sushi, I realized there were different types, and some tasted better than I expected. This changed my perspective because I learned that I should try foods before judging them. Prompt: Writing about an offensive encounter can bring up different emotions, even when the story is imagined. What emotions did you experience while writing your story? What part of the writing affected you the most, and why?

Prompt Response: While writing my story, I felt disappointed that some people actually have the courage to say offensive things to others. The part that affected me the most was writing about what was said because it made me think about how people can choose to say hurtful things without thinking about how it could make someone else feel. Summary: We redid part of the worksheet about the offensive encounter and added more details about what happened and how it affected us. Reflection: I learned that when we encounter someone saying something offensive, we should not respond with violence and instead act like adults. I also learned that we should stay calm and handle the situation in a mature way.

Prompt: Write about a conversation that changed you. What was said, and why did that conversation have such a lasting impact on you?

Prompt Response:  One conversation that changed me was when my best friend talked to me during a time when I felt lost and did not really feel like myself. They reminded me that I did not have to change who I was just to fit in or make other people happy. That conversation stayed with me because it helped me realize that I should be comfortable being myself and not let other people’s opinions decide how I see myself. Summary: We read Countee Cullen’s poem “Incident” and analyzed how a short conversation or interaction can have a lasting impact on someone. Reflection: I learned that even a short conversation can affect someone for a long time. Words can change how a person feels about themselves, so it is important to think about what we say to other people.
